Starting Reception

As a school we understand that starting school for the first time can be difficult for some children and we pride ourselves on having a smooth transition into school not only from the school and local nurseries but for those who have not attended any previous setting.

In the Summer Term prior to your child attending school our Early Years Assistant Headteacher will invite all future parents into school for a transition meeting. During this meeting all the information you require will be shared and you will have an opportunity to ask any questions.

Also in the Summer Term children are invited into school to spend some time with their new teacher, becoming familiar with their new environments, peers and adults. Parents are required to stay for this session.

Early in the Autumn Term class teachers and teaching assistants will undertakes home visits for each child who has not attended our school nursery. This enables children to spend time with their teacher in their own environment and for parents to share essential information with teachers e.g. medical needs, dietary requirements.

Once September comes around pupils are given a staggered start date, starting with the oldest children. Children will complete three half days and then complete full-time hours, this enables children to become familiar with the staff, environments and routines allowing for a smooth transition.

Transition from Primary to Secondary

‘Transition’ describes the movement that takes place from one familiar setting (including the home) to another.  It is defined as the process where policy and practice has been adapted to support children in settling in to their new learning environment in preparation for future learning and development.

At Preston Park, we want our children to experience a smooth transition throughout their learning, so that the pace and quality of learning are maintained to ensure that children continue to make the very best progress.

Teachers from our feeder school Claremont come to school in the Autumn term with some pupils from the previous year to discuss their first month in Secondary School. Additionally, children attend Taster Days in the summer term. Our Creative Curriculum topic in the summer term is ‘Transitions’ where we focus on Transitions in general as well as the Primary to Secondary move.
