Our Reading Vision – To be an outstanding Reading school

At Preston Park Primary School, we want children to foster a love of reading and create a reading culture. We want children to be confident in reading and discussing a variety of books.

Reading at EYFS and Key Stage 1

Children read to an adult weekly using a levelled book. This book is sent home for children to read with parents to consolidate learning. Children are assessed using Benchmark to ensure they are able to read the text with 10% challenge and have a sound comprehension.

In Year 1 children who have been identified below age expectations will read to an adult twice more during the week and take this levelled book home to read with parents.

Teachers read a quality text to the children daily to ensure they are hearing rich vocabulary daily.

Phonics is taught for half an hour a day using the Read Write Inc scheme, the children are all taught to their ability through streamed focus groups.

Reading at Key Stage 2:

In KS2, reading is taught using Destination Reader. This is a programme that blends a range of learning behaviours and reading strategies which, brought together, allow children to explore and understand texts independently, at a deeper level.

Our expectations:

For our children to become fluent readers, we expect children to read at home every day for at least 30 minutes.

Years 3 and 4: 30 minutes

Years 5 and 6: 40 minutes

Our role at school:

Teachers: teach focussed reading lessons, asking questions and engaging children in a range of genres.

Families: listen to your child read and ask questions.
