Key Mathematical Questions:

  • What do you already know about this concept?
  • Can you identify and explain any patterns?
  • What strategies will you use to help you solve the problem?
  • How can you justify your answer?
  • Why do you think that...?
  • What strategies do you have for self-checking?

Essential Key Skills:

  • Fluency in the fundamentals of mathematics -  recall and application of knowledge
  • Reason mathematically (justify, generalise and explain why)
  • Trial and improvement
  • Pattern spotting
  • Working backwards
  • Visualising
  • Conjecturing
  • Systematic approach to solving problems
  • Use of ICT to support mathematics (logic, logo, excel etc.)
  • Independence and resilience

Using and applying mathematics within English

In English, children develop the coherence required to explain an answer or process behind an answer fluently through debate, developing a well-balanced argument and discussion. This is an important skill for a mathematician. Children learn in English to infer deeper meaning from a text and can apply this to their mathematics when problem solving.
